Clinical Observation of the Large Intestinal Obstruction

Abstract
The material of this report was made on 102 cases of patients with the large intestinal obstruction seen at Chonnam University Hospital from May, 1962 through April, 1966, and treated surgically. 1. The cause of the large intestinal obstruction was as follows in order of frequency: intussusception (38.20/6), neoplastic stricture( 15. 7 % ), volvulus(12.7%) and so on.
2. In age distribution, 28 cases(27.5%) were observed under one year of age, showing the peak incidence, and 66 cases(64.776) occured in male and 36 cases(35.3%) in female, with ratio of 2 to 1.
3. Forty seven of all cases(46.1 %) were seen from late spring to summer.
4. The most commom clinical symptoms were abdominal pain(83.37"), abdominal distention (61.8%) and vomiting(60. 8 % ). Physical examination revealed that more than 50% of all cases
showed abdominal distention or abdominal tenderness. In two-third of cases, leucocytosis(above 10.000/c cm) was revealed.
5. In X-ray study, 84 cases showed positive findings, 51 of 60 cases in simple abdomen and 22 of 24 cases in Barium enema.
6. A majority of all cases (32.37o) was seen at this department within 24 hours since onset of initial symptoms.
7. Forty three of 102 cases(42.2%) were treated with the operative intestinal decompression. Emergency operation was perfurmed at 24 cases and late operation at 78 cases.
8. All mortality was 14.77. (15 cases) and the frequent cause of death was electrolyte imbalance (26.7 N. ).
